Major Optical Lens Material Manufacturer KOC Solution Chooses Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do for Its New Production Site

Gyeongsangbuk-do and Mungyeong signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KOC Solution for an investment worth more than KRW 50 billion and 150 new jobs. The signing ceremony, held on November 21 at the 2nd Conference Room in the Mungyeong City Hall building, was attended by Gyeongsangbuk-do Deputy Governor of Economy Byeong-yun Wu, Mungyeong Mayor Yun-hwan Ko, Mr. Dong-gyu Jang, CEO of KOC Solution, and other guests.

Under the MOU, KOC Solution plans to invest more than KRW 50 billion to build advanced optical lens material production lines on a 33,060 m2 site inside the 2nd Singi General Industrial Complex.

According to Mr. Dong-gyu Jang, KOC Solution seeks to grow as the world’s second largest optical lens material manufacturer after Mitsui Chemicals in Japan. Mitsui Chemicals is a global company that controls 70–80% of the global optical lens material market.

KCC Solution is an optical lens material manufacturer that specializes in medium-refractive index lenses, high-refractive index lenses, and photochromic lenses. The company has developed and manufactured optical lens materials since its foundation in 1999. Mitsui Chemicals acquired KOC Solution in 2013, with a goal to use the Korean company’s technical expertise. KOC Solution operates a manufacturing plant (Jiangsu KOC Optical Material Technology, Co., Ltd.) and a trading company (Danyang KOC Optical Trading Co.) in Danyang, Jiangsu, China.

KOC Solution plans to relocate its HQ and plants, currently located in Bugang-myeon, Sejong-si, to Mungyeong. Ultimately, the company seeks to achieve global competitiveness by building a mass-production facility through substantial expansion.

KOC Solution is also reportedly committed to improving its technical competitiveness through continued R&D efforts and currently considering plans for further investments in new industries. That is why the world’s attention is focused on what this promising company has in store for the future.

Deputy Governor of Economy Byeong-yun Wu said: “I would like to express my gratitude to KOC Solution for making the bold decision of relocating to Gyeongsangbuk-do despite the sluggish local economy. I am confident that the presence of such competitive company as KOC Solution will breathe new life into the local economy and industry.

“We will provide full administrative and financial support to the company’s operations so that KOC Solution may consider this relocation one of the best decisions it has made. I hope the company builds up its competitiveness through continued investment, and preemptively respond to the market demands, to get ahead in the global optical lens market.”
